Steak toppings (AKA toppers) are a great way to add extra flavour (and some serious plate appeal) to your favourite steaks.
There are so many topping options out there, but we’ve done our best to narrow this post down to our favourite 3 steak topping categories – butter blends, salsas and cheese.
Butter Blends
One ingredient that works surprisingly well on steak is butter. When used sparingly, butter adds a delicate, moist and creamy glaze without overpowering the flavour of the meat. For extra flavour, we recommend adding seasonings like onions, crushed garlic, herbs, chilli, mushrooms, lemon, bacon, blue cheese or whatever else strikes your fancy.
Make sure that the butter is room temperature (this makes it easy to spoon on top of steak) – the butter will melt on contact with the meat and create a layer of gourmet succulence.
Salsa
If you want something more refreshing than butter, salsa is definitely the way to go. A great steak salsa will be chunky, fresh and easy to spoon on top of the steak (not a liquified salsa sauce). To make a salsa, you first need to pick a base. A safe choice is tomatoes, or you can go for fruit like apples, mango, pineapple or watermelon (the sweetness of fruit adds a pleasant flavour that contrasts well with the savoury taste of beef).
Once you have your base, add a herb like coriander, Italian parsley or basil – this adds a nice green colour and plenty of flavour. Then you can go ahead and add garlic, onion, capers, jalapenos and/or spices. If you want to add some lime juice or honey, do so sparingly.
Cheese
Cheese is another classic and delectable steak topper. The perfect cheese for steak is blue cheese – although you may prefer something else. The right cheese will be crumbly, so stick to options like gorgonzola, blue cheese or feta.
For ideal texture, we recommend that you mix in some garlic and onion as well as something soft (like cream cheese or goat’s cheese) to hold the cheese topping together.
Steak toppings add a gourmet touch and an extra layer of delectability and general deliciousness to any steak meal. We highly recommend that you have some fun and experiment with creating your own unique steak toppings!
